My Time at the Project

Volunteering at The Arajuno Road Project has been an amazing experience! I have been here for four weeks and loved it all.

Typically, we teach four to five days a week from about 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. However, some of the schools take an hour to get to so it’s an early start at 6:30 a.m.! We never teach on our own, always in pairs, and although lesson plans are scary at first, you soon get the hang of it. Plus, there is always someone around to help if you need it. The volunteer house is great; there is plenty of space and hammocks for chilling in the afternoon. There are two cats, Medusa and Biscuit, and the most wonderful dog in the world- Jim. I will miss him so much… We take turns to cook in pairs and have a tasty family style meal around the table every evening. Weekends are free to do as you please, even go away for the weekend! Yesterday we were off school as it was “Teacher Appreciation Day” and we spent the day at a river in a jungle setting. We picnicked, swam, sunbathed and jumped from a bridge (well some of us did!) It definitely made all of our hard work feel appreciated! I would recommend this volunteer experience to others.
